Based in the Nanaimo area on Vancouver Island, Cutlass Film is owned and operated by Director/Cinematographer Ken Diewert. He was first trained at Vancouver Film School in 1990/91 and worked part-time at independent productions throughout the 1990's, as well as taking time away from his full time employment to work in television commercials and broadcast cable productions. These commercials were shot on 35mm or 16mm film. Today we are using state-of the-art High Definition Video (HDV) equipment to create incredible, affordable images. We can even run the new cameras at 24 frames per second to create the "film look".
Cutlass Film is named after our property on Cutlass Lookout on Protection Island, off the east coast of Vancouver Island, near Nanaimo. The entire island has pirate themed street and park names.
Our principal camera is the Canon XL H1 . Generally regarded as the best in its class. The H1 is capable of capturing stunning images through a range of shooting challenges.
